Testimonials

“Thank you so much for connecting me with my mentor! It has been over 3 years now since you connected me with Dr. Jerelle Joseph where I have benefited from this connection quite a lot. Over the years, I was able to ask any questions I had free of any judgment. I received quite a lot of important advice while pursuing my undergraduate degree at the UWI Cave Hill campus. Most importantly, when I was in my final year confused about the next steps I may take to pursue my Master's degree, I was easily able to communicate with my mentor and get more than enough advice and insight into opportunities I may explore. That was very relieving at the time. I am very grateful for having this valuable connection with her! I would highly recommend this mentoring opportunity to anyone!”

“ Mrs. Alberta Henry, my CAPE Unit 1 Chemistry Teacher at the time, hosted her inaugural ‘meet the mentors’ sessions during my first year. Essentially, professionals from various STEM fields visited the class to share their career journeys and insights into their different industries of employment. Now let’s consider that at the time, my sole academic focus ( as it had been for much of my school life) was maintaining good grades - with the hopes of receiving a scholarship for university. My perspective changed after the session held by Dr. Rand Jean. Dr. Jean, who is an Electrical Engineer, shared his journey from leaving university, to working at INTEL and subsequently returning to Saint Lucia to establish his business. As a student at the time with aspirations of becoming a mechanical engineer, this was the first time that I received a personal account from somebody who transitioned from student to the professional field. Obviously, I was intrigued and impressed by his resume - seeing him driving away in his BMW clearly indicated that he had found success in his field. However, and more importantly, I left the session with a shift in focus. I started looking beyond the immediate hurdles of school, (very challenging) chemistry labs and assignments, to what I hoped to accomplish and the overall impact that I wanted to make in my career. Today as a recently graduated Mechanical Engineer, this forward-thinking mindset has remained with me. The world faces an ever-growing list of challenges that I hope to play a part in solving. Having a mentor - someone who was once in your shoes and is currently doing the things that you always dreamt of doing, while sharing advice on how you can do the same, is an invaluable resource. ”
